Semax: A Neuropeptide Research Overview
17 June 2026
Semax is a synthetic neuropeptide that originated from research into fragments of the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). It is frequently studied in neuroscience research focused on cognition, neuroprotection and the stress response.
What is Semax?
Semax is a short peptide derived from an ACTH(4–10) fragment, modified for stability. In the literature it is examined as a model neuropeptide for studying central-nervous-system signalling without the hormonal activity of the parent molecule.
Pathways studied in the literature
- Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and related neurotrophic signalling.
- Neuroprotection in models of oxidative and ischaemic stress.
- Attention, memory and learning endpoints in animal studies.
- Modulation of the stress and immune response.
Summary of research findings
Much of the Semax research base originates from studies examining neurotrophic markers and behavioural endpoints in animal models. As with many neuropeptides, the translation of these findings is an area of active study, and results should be read in the context of each experimental model.
Related research areas
Semax is often studied alongside Selank, another peptide investigated for effects on the stress response and anxiety-related endpoints in preclinical work.
